Tips for viewing PDF documents
The majority of documents in CAL’s Download Centre are in portable document format (PDF). PDF documents include a zoom function which can make text appear larger or smaller, to suit the individual requirements of readers. To zoom in or out, use the ‘+’ or ‘-‘ buttons respectively, in your browser. You can also zoom in by holding ‘Control’ and pressing ‘+’ on your keyboard. Pressing ‘Control’ and ‘-‘ on your keyboard will zoom out.

Reading out loud
For people with vision impairments, PDFs can be read aloud by Adobe Reader 6 and later versions of this software. The document must first be saved to disk and then opened in Adobe Reader for this function to work. Then click View> Read Out Loud> Activate Read Out Loud and then once activated choose from one of the options in the Read Out Loud panel. Below are the keyboard shortcuts:

  • Hold Control, Shift and Y to Activate Read Out Loud.
  • Hold Control, Shift and V to Read This Page Only.
  • Hold Control, Shift and B to Read to End of Document.
  • Hold Control, Shift and C to Pause or Resume Reading.
  • Hold Control, Shift and E to Stop Reading.

Downloading Adobe Reader
Adobe Reader is free software available from Adobe Systems Incorporated, and is designed to specifically to view PDF documents. To download the latest version of Adobe Reader (which includes the Read Out Loud function) please click here and follow the instructions.
