If your organisation is not part of the Crown or authorised in writing by the Crown, or sometimes does not copy for the services of the Crown - CAL 's Government Licensing team can arrange a GovCopy Licence directly with your organisation. This enables your organisation to make unlimited numbers of copies of:

  • 10% of the number of pages in a hardcopy work or one chapter;
  • 10% of the number of words in a digital work or one chapter; and
  • an article or several articles if they relate to the same subject matter.

All of the above can be done under the GovCopy Licence without needing to contact the copyright owner directly.

Activities allowed under the GovCopy Licence

Organisations with a GovCopy Licence may use up to 10% of copyright material. This includes reproductions and communications including internal emailing and uploading of copyright material to intranets.

Articles and presentations relating to the GovCopy Licence

The Australian Government Solicitor has published an article on how the GovCopy Licence helps it to use third party copyright works – in particular photocopying, electronic storage and communications which it uses for its legal business and client legal work. You can find a copy of this article here. Additionally, CAL has published an article on the benefits of the licence for its members and licensees in its quarterly newsletter, Calendar. A copy of the article can be found here.
